Lightning!

Posted on October 4, 2010

I just wanted to share a couple of photos I took over the weekend. I was walking to the kitchen on Saturday night and saw the lightning hitting the mountains. I just had to grab my camera and see if I could get a couple of shots. It was perfect timing. Dusk gave me the perfect lighing. I hope you enjoy the photos. Make sure to click on the photos to see the larger versions.

Shout Creations Business Card

Posted on September 20, 2010

Whew… It’s been a busy week. I really ment to upload these photos last week but I’m just getting around to it now. So here they are, finally. I canot be happier with the final result. I love the texture of the paper and the color came out just right. It’s a really satisfying feeling knowing that you made your own business cards from scratch.

I learned a lot in the process and hopefully it will rub off on some of my future designs. Most important is that measuring and cutting took twice as long as I thought it would. The phrase “measure twice and cut once ” really came into play. The guys over at Lettre Sauvage were awesome. Cameron helped me every step of the way (actually, he kinda setup most of the work).  He really helped out and I can’t thank him enough. Oh and thanks to Fiona for helping me get the right colors. If you live locally around the Santa Paula area defiantly check them out.

It was really cool to jump back-in-time for a day and see how people were printing back in the 30′s. Oh and if anyone is thinking about doing this in the futre, make sure you leave enough room to register your plates. It will save a ton of time. My website might not be finished but at least I have business cards to hand out!

My letterpress plates are in!

Posted on September 15, 2010

Wow! UPS just dropped off the letterpress plates for my new business cards. Tomorrow I have an appointment with Lettre Sauvage a little family run letterpress printing and design studio in Santa Paula CA. I’m so excited to see what the final result will be. Boxcar Press made the printing plates and I can’t say enough good things about their customer service. I had a little problem with the uploaded files but they called me on the phone to personally make sure the problem was fixed. What an awesome company based out of Syracuse NY. So check out the diagram below. This is how the cards will be printed. I hope to upload photos of the whole process tomorrow. I just love being able to get away from my computers and print my business cards on a machine thats more then twice my age!

Bonus material in a movie trailer?

Posted on August 5, 2010

How’s everyone doing today? I just checked this out and had to share it. This is the new interactive trailer for “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.” The trailer works on so many levels; the first being the design. I love the retro 80’s Nintendo look, oh and the music brings it all home. After this trailer loads, you know there has to be some kind of “game” ahead.

Go ahead and check it out (make sure to hit the fullscreen button on the right hand side) . While watching the trailer make sure to click on the screen for bonus behind-the-scenes info and points! Every bonus adds a sneak-peak to Scott Pilgrim’s world (just like why he is wearing a Smashing Pumpkins t-shirt). It is great to see a completely new way of interacting with a movie trailer. Everything is so engaging.  You even get to cash in on the points you earned while watching the trailer.

This iTrailer is just so original. I really gets me excited when a new concept like this hits a home run and really involves you in the movie experience.  I can’t wait to see the movie. Click here to see it in action.

YouTube in Flash & HTML5

Posted on August 2, 2010

Hello everyone! I just found out that there is a new way to embed YouTube videos that default to either Flash or HTML5 depending on your browser’s capabilities.  This is a long way of saying that you should be able to see this video on both your main PC and also your iPad or iPhone. Enjoy the Conan video and let me know if you run into any problems.

New Client Website

Posted on July 29, 2010

Hey everyone, I just wanted to send out a quick one today. I just finish coding a friend’s website. I think it turned out really good! It’s the Portfolio site for Jay F. Martinez. Everyone should really check it out. Jay has a very contemporary style and has designed everything from T-Shirts to Flip Video skins. If you like the Filp designs you can buy them right now at the Filp video store (my favorite design Big Ben, is a top seller). Make sure to check out his blog for his most recent work. Oh yeah and if you like his designs make sure to drop him an email…

and tell him Gabe sent you!

Sharefile: Online Storage for Businesses

Posted on July 27, 2010

I was recently asked to set up online storage for a client of mine named, Mary Ellen, owner of Quint Payroll & Employer Services in Ojai, CA. She wanted a safe and secure way for clients to upload and download files.  After looking around the internet, I stumbled upon Sharefile.com.  It was the perfect solution. It was really easy to set up, offered complete personalization and was reasonably priced.

Unlike Dropbox.com, Sharefile is targeted toward businesses exactly like Quint.  The administer settings are the key to the whole service. As an administer Mary Ellen has the ability to create specific folders and permissions for each of her clients. Each file is time-stamped and logged. She knows the exact time that a client accesses a file. She has only been using the service for a couple of weeks but is very happy with the results.

I also have to say, that the Support team at Sharefile is excellent! When I called to get a question answered, I was greeted by a vary nice woman named Sophia that informed me that she would be our contact if we had any problems or questions in the future. I really liked the fact that she understood that I was the web designer and Mary Ellen was my client.  She made a note of this in her database and now knows that I take care of the technical issues and Quint takes care of the billing.  The whole thing was very personable and it’s nice to know that I will be talking to the same person if I have any problems or questions with the service.

I have been extremely satisfied with Sharefile  and I will definitely consider them in the future.

Awesome Letterpress Class

Posted on July 26, 2010

So last week I was lucky enough to find a local letterpress class only about 20 miles away in Santa Paula Ca. It was awesome! The class is taught by Fiona Spring in her home studio, Lettre Sauvage. It’s really nice to have a chance to break away from the digital and use your hands to make stuff. I felt like I had time traveled back to the 1930′s. The letterpress machines were large and made  a sound to match their mass. Everything was cast iron or steel. I loved it! I’m sorry that I didn’t take any pictures while I was there but I will be going back to make some business cards and letterhead in September. Check out the video below to see the same type of machine I was using:
